It is actually located in the center of the coast of Lake Como, halfway between the Swiss Canton of Grigioni pass and the Po Valley. The name therefore stands for “middle ground”. The municipality is divided into 10 small hamlets, all with their own attraction for tourists. An area that boasts a naturalistic panorama that is nothing short of suggestive, accompanied by prestigious villas and monuments.

The history of Tremezzo

To trace the origins of Tremezzo it is necessary to go back to 880 AD. The date to which the first certified historical document mentioning the location refers. At the time the name indicated was Curte Tremecia, while the current name was chosen only in the decades following the year 1000. Tremezzo boasts a rich history to say the least. It became part of the defensive system of Comacina Island, deployed alongside Milan. This led to the attack of the Como people, who razed the village to the ground in 1169.

The most prosperous period dates back to the beginning of the 17th century. When numerous enchanting buildings and villas were built. The village became a real point of reference for the Italian and European bourgeoisie. In fact, one could appreciate Dutch, French and Austrian families in the area. It is also possible to appreciate Villa la Carlia, built in 1676. A private villa which is still used as a residence today. The Grand Hotel Tremezzo is 20 years younger, however, whose lines bring to mind the much-loved Art Nouveau style.
